B24.

This is part of the #Dungeon23 challenge in which you make one room to a dungeon every day for a year. In an effort to link my memories to the creation, I am also writing a personal journal entry with each room that may or may not be related.
You don’t have to read that part.

The Northern door to this room is locked with a waist high slit for goblins to peer out.

The southern wall has been busted open by a massive stone spike that came up through the floor. It has created two narrow exits to B28.

This room is a barracks to the strongest Goblin warriors. They roughhouse all the time, testing their might against one another in grappling matches.

There are nests of mud and sticks here where these goblins sleep. The room is littered with rotten food remains. It smells like stale sweat and and sour tripe.

They can be alerted by the bell on the western wall that can be pulled from area B23.

These Goblin Grapplers, of which there are 5, will jack your day up. They are strong and skilled at tearing the tendons in your legs. They are the last line of defense between you and the Ashfoot camp in B28.

GOBLIN GRAPPLERS

  • Make a save to avoid getting leg locked. Once the leg lock is applied you are immobile and every round will lose Dexterity. The Goblins will break your whole body down from ankle to neck if you don’t escape.

  • Massive egos and might get more competitive against one another, even when faced with mortal danger. Could be used to your advantage…

  • Will never use a weapon.

Goblin grapplers are not my original idea. I got the concept from a Kobold Press book called Prepared!, which is great for quick adventures for a night when you got nothing ...ahem… prepared. Also great for conventions as they are pretty much perfectly calibrated for a 3 hour session. It’s compatible with Dungeons & Dragons Fifth Edition, and I highly recommend it. It’s terribly useful, especially if you’re just starting as a Dungeon Master.

Anyway, one of the low level adventures features these special goblins that use pro wrestling moves. If you’ve been following along you can probably see that this idea is perfect for my sensibilities. And as we approach the end of February, I had to fit the concept in once more.

Kobold Press probably produces some of my favorite 5e stuff. I was actually really happy when they said they were producing their own RPG during the OGL madness, and was not surprised when it apparently turned out to be a bit of a 5e clone. I haven’t checked it out yet, but I think that’s a great idea.

There’s an incredible Fifth Edition base of users, and it’s not a broken game by any means. And it makes sense for Kobold Press to make something that keeps their entire back catalogue relevant. I’ve got friends who love 5e, and probably won’t move on to One D&D. They want to play the game they’re comfortable with and enjoy. It’s nice that this very important edition of the game will have a good steward to keep it alive. I’ve got a ton of their books, and look forward to how they’ll evolve 5e. Everything they’ve already done in their supplements gives me a lot of confidence.

5e isn’t really my game of choice, but if I had to play it, I’d most certainly want to play their version than Wizards of the Coast.

….

Holy cow February is almost over. We almost have two levels done. Awesome.

See you tomorrow.
