This is part of the #Dungeon23 challenge in which you make one room to a dungeon every day for a year. In an effort to link my memories to the creation, I am also writing a personal journal entry with each room that may or may not be related.
You don’t have to read that part.

ENCOUNTER

A map using the DungeonScrawl website. Check it out.

This is the chamber of ZOLTUX THE NECROMANCER.

He runs this bitch.

In the center of this room is a dark altar made of skulls and bones. If you can successfully sneak in here, Zoltux’s vile grimoire of necromancy will be here. It is written in Chaos and will corrupt even the purest of lawful souls. Or you could use it to learn how to make zombies. Up to you.

On the wall to the north is a canopy made of tanned human flesh. Under the window is a bed covered in black silks.

In the southwest corner of the room is a large container. It wreaks of stale blood. Because it’s filled with blood (surprise!). And Zoltux’s latest creation The Crimson Ghoul.

If you attack Zoltux, he will summon the Crimson Ghoul.

The Crimson Ghoul - uses a breath attack (reverse breath attack? inhale attack?) that pulls your blood through your pores and other orifices. If he drops your CON (or some other applicable score) to zero, you are drained of blood.

Zoltux - will try to put you to sleep, or use some hypnotic charm spell to make you attack your friends.

If shit goes south for Zoltux, he’ll bail. He’ll either run out of the Fortress to be protected by the Trogdars, or he will make his way to room A29, which has an exit to the outside world.

OR

He’ll try to get you to work with him against the creatures on the floor below. He’s battling against a faction of goblins on the lower level for control of Kik’ina Kir.

That’s why the stairwell is blocked off.

So play with that.

A funky little library I made with midjourney Can I build this?

1/22/23

Watched some UFC last night. Brandon Moreno looked great and was a gear ahead of Daveison Figueiredo, who I figured had a terrible weight cut. Glad to hear Daveison is moving up a class. There’s a lot of marquee fights at Bantamweight for him.

There are some fun defenses for Brandon Moreno moving forward. I can see Brandon Royval challenging by the end of the year, and that could be really fun.

I’m sure there’s a huge overlap of table top role-players and combat sport fans.

Gail and I made a little reading challenge for each other this year. In the past we’ve had a movie watching game, where we have specific criteria we try to fulfill with each movie. Like “a movie directed by Claire Denis” or “a movie made in Kenya.”

We’re probably going to do that this year, but we also decided to do one for books - because reading is fundamental! Unlike the movies, which we watch together, we’ll be picking out our own books and reading separately.

So here’s our…

2023 Reading Challenge

  1. A book picked out by the other person.

  2. A movie in which a character goes from a big city to a small town.

  3. A book set in Russia.

  4. A book you meant to read in 2022.

  5. A book published in the year you were born.

  6. A book published in the second half of 2023.

  7. Historical Fiction set in Asia.

  8. An Edgar Award Winner.

  9. A book about non-human characters.

  10. A non-fiction book about something from the 1920s.

I honestly don’t know what I’m going to pick for any of that. I didn’t have anything in mind when we chose the prompts. Like neither of us even knew what an Edgar Award awarded, you know? I just wanted an award category.

Before we start we both have to finish the book we’re reading right now. I’m currently reading Entangled Life by Merlin Sheldrake. It’s a non-fiction book about fungus and it’s mind-blowing. I started reading it because mushrooms are one of my favorite foods and I wanted to learn more about how fungus actually works.

Apparently the gap in humanity’s knowledge in regards to how fungus functions is insanely wide, especially compared to plants.

Like I didn’t know that people can’t figure out how to consistently breed truffles. There’s a guy who tries, and is sometimes successful at it, but couldn’t tell you what he does that makes a difference from one batch to the next. Like one season, every batch he made worked. He doesn’t know why and can’t replicate it.

So depending on your temperament, our lack of understanding of something so intertwined in our ecosystem may seem wondrous or terrifying. Or both.

Will there be some fungal influenced areas in our mega-dungeon?

You bet your ass their will be.

See you tomorrow.
