happy birthday jonathan

Mothership RPG is having a big month, particularly over at Backerkit, where there’s over 20 projects currently looking for funding. You can check it out right now.

As some of you might know, I’m a big Mothership fan and have been running games for folks for years now(and will again at the next GaryCon.)

In fact, most of you probably know me because I made an actual play podcast called Analysis Complete, where we played Mothership.

That season is easily our most popular, and it’s the one that I get the most feedback on.

A lot of folks have asked me to do another season using Mothership.

I don’t know if I’ll ever do that. Sorry.

But I still felt a need to contribute something to #MothershipMonth.

This is that contribution.

a horror scenario for friends

what’s inside?

Inside the document above, is a scenario that should allow you to run a ghostly game of Mothership with your friends.

This is what I would write if I was running Mothership again for Out of Depth Plays.

It includes

  • a map of a space cabin

  • 6 character questionnaire’s to make deeper characters.

  • a unique Panic Table made for this specific scenario

  • an example of game flow showing how I’d start the game

  • And a bunch of other stuff.

I tried to format it the best I could, and hopefully it’s all clear enough that you can use it.

I wrote it in LibreOffice. I made the map on DungeonScrawl.

It’s very very no frills. There’s probably a ton of mistakes and errors. No I’m not going back to edit it.

But I think there’s a ton of content to inspire you and your friends to have an exciting time.

Did I mention it’s for free?

why free

Because I want as many people as possible to play it. Pass it around. Send it to friends. I want everyone to have a chance to play this game with their friends.

I put a lot of time into it. I’m very proud of it. I don’t want to make it into a product. I want it to be a scenario that gets passed around by people who think it’s cool.

If you really want to send me money, I set up a ko-fi, so you can send me whatever value you got out of it.

Or you can go to the usual Patreon and subscribe for whatever tier you feel appropriate. I recommend checking out Patreon anyway, because you can subscribe for Free, and keep up to date on whatever I’m working on.

one last thought

I made Happy Birthday Jonathan as kind of a birthday present to myself. It’s a game that I think works best among friends because it has the potential to get emotionally heavy. And I think having friends at the table is best for those types of games.

In many ways this game feels like a piece of me. Those who know me will see a lot of myself in not only title character, but general elements of the scenario. But it’s also not me at all. It’s what people make it to be.

And I hope that you and you’re friends make it special.

Enjoy.

STAY OUT OF DEPTH

Hey if you enjoy the work Jae is doing, whether it’s this blog post or the podcast, and you’d like to keep in touch, the best place to do that is our Patreon.

www.patreon.com/getoutofdepth

Patreon now allows anyone with an account to follow a creator for FREE. So you don’t have to spend money to hear what Jae has been up to. Of course there are some perks to being a paid member, but we’ll let you investigate that on your own.

Thanks
